Hi, my name is Nhi Tran. I happened to minor in Translation. It was not my intention to study Translation but the more I step into the field, the more interested I am. I hope to learn from everyone and every bit of Translation.

My name is Will Chilson and I want to work within the audiovisual translation field subtitling for tv shows and movies focusing on an English and Japanese language pairing. I find the use of visuals in relation to utterances in the form of stories and accounts, whether on a still screen or in motion, compared to written passages with descriptive language interesting because even with descriptive language different readers can have a different referent in mind. However, in a tv show or movie, everyone watching will have the same visual referent. Another interesting aspect is how monolingual viewers and bilingual viewers can all see the same scene but depending on their knowledge of the languages, there can be different ways the same scene is understood. Allowing for missed or gained information due to how the subtitles were written and what was said vocally in the show/movie.

My name is Jazmin Briseño. I am a full time student at CSULB, my major is Spanish with a minor in Translation Studies. In the future, I will hopefully be working at the high school district of my choice as a Spanish teacher. I would like to apply Translation to my classroom because I feel that as a world language teacher it is important for students to learn the different types of ways things can and how they should be translated to fit whatever message they are attempting to portray. I also see myself maybe living abroad in a country like Spain or Portugal to teach the English language, and do some side work in translation for extra income. A fun fact about me is that I enjoy being on vacation and having new experiences, like new foods and listening to live music wherever I am at that moment. 😊
